Most pets, when first bought, are far too weak to be of any real use. That's why it is generally considered a waste to buy a pet. By the time that aplayer passes the requirements to own apet, they are far stronger than anything that the pet is capable of killing.
What results is that either the pet dies when the player fights, or they end up having to strip naked and fight incredibly lame enemies until the pet has leveled up enough to be of any use.
So, I think that it would be a good idea to give players the option of where to place the pets' fight in a battle: first or last.
